Sam Ng (b.1999, Hong Kong) lives and works in London, where he graduated with first-class honours in BA (Hons) Fine Art from Central St Martins in 2022. He has had several shows around the UK, such as Pearlescent at the Handbag Factory; Beep Painting Biennial 2024; Innocent Pleasures Suit Me by Warbling in London; and The Lido Open 22 in Margate. Sam Ng is collected by various private collectors in the UK, Hong Kong, and South Korea.
Growing up in a fast-paced city, Sam is acutely aware of time, and change shaped his interest in capturing the quiet significance of ordinary moments, infusing them with beauty and meaning to preserve the fleeting emotions they hold within a still frame. Sam uses painting as a medium to sculpt time, as his work goes beyond the surface of images, focusing on their underlying essence and the passage of time. By emphasising the physical qualities of colours, Ng expands the possibilities of painting as a visual language.
His style blurs the lines between abstraction and figuration, exploring the relationship between imagery and the painted surface. Sam's work addresses themes of memory and loss, using fragments of the past to create art that transcends time and context. Key elements of his style include colour, texture, and the process of stripping away layers to reveal the essential marks, reflecting the trace of time.
