Chris Hagan (b.1974) is an emerging British painter based in Sussex UK. His paintings combine layering, gestural mark making and a scraping back of the painted surface, related to an expressive approach to art making. A commitment to place, landscape and quiet contemplation are at the heart of his practice. The use and research of heightened colour theory embody his artistic practice. Hagan is an artist who endeavours to communicate how he feels about the visible world he depicts.
Travelling around the countryside throughout 2025 inspired a series of semi abstract landscape and figurative paintings, in later paintings treating the traditional mise en scene with a contemporary approach. To the artist, landscape and a physical presence recall place, memory and a connection to the infinite aspect of nature. In his figurative work the quietness, joy and simplicity of everyday moments are evoked, which Hagan aims to elevate through an expressive palette and a gestural, yet subtle abstraction of forms.
Recent exhibitions include Lido Stores Winter Show (2025/26), Lido Open 2025 (group), Between Land and Sea (March 2025)- Contemporary Six Gallery Manchester, Make it Shape it (September 2024) - University of Brighton, When is Now (Jan 2023), Blue Shop Gallery London (solo) and Works on Paper (2023), Blue Shop Gallery (group). Chris Hagan was shortlisted for the John Moore’s Art prize in 2023, one of the selected winners for the Delphian Open Call, Summer 2023, and a finalist for the Jacksons Art Prize 2024.
